Question for today: Can being a “Visual Learner” sometimes become a Handicap?

I don’t usually do this. However…

Today I’ve been trying to teach myself how to write certain types of poetry that I haven’t practiced in quite some time and/or never truly understood, and in doing so, I am remembering why I struggled with poetry when I was in school. I’m what’s called a “visual learner,” and as a result I cannot wrap my mind around certain concepts by merely having them explained to me verbally; I literally need to visualize them somehow… That’s why I’m best at writing the more simple forms of poetry: Haikus, Limericks, Imagery, and of course Free Verse. I want to know what some of you who care to answer the question think. That being said, please comment below with your answer to this question. Consider these questions as well while contemplating your answer: Is this the best way of learning — Why or why not? If not, how can a visual learner overcome the drawbacks?

  1. I’m a visual learner too. I think the only thing that “handicaps” or more so hinders a visual learner is that we take more time in doing a task versus someone who gets verbal direction. The reason why we hold up before we get started is because we have to be shown which takes longer and then you have find someone who is willing to show you, etc.
But…IMO being visual has its pros and cons. PRO: you can actually see HOW a process is done. Point-click-send; CON: you won’t know WHY a process is done. Study of the theory.
In writing, you have to be able to use both especially when you’re trying to find your own voice. Visual learning you’ll tend to take on the the “voice” of other writers when you read some of their work for reference; but you have to be careful. Use visuals for language mechanics only.
    I think I’m making senseπŸ€”πŸ€”?

      1. Say what you mean and mean what you say, is my motto…. Of course, I’m in sort of a newer phase in my life where I care less of what others think of me. That doesn’t always lead to the best of decisions, from what I understand. But at any rate, I’m going on a tangent, so I’ll stop now. lol
